During the eighteenth century, lush and sumptuous gardens and enclosed courtyards were a symbol of pride and status. The garden motifs often seen in Bakhtiar rugs, a checkerboard field with animals, flowers, palms and canals between the patterns, represents these courtyards. While the garden motif is very common in the Bakhtiar rugs other design with floral or geometric themes are also common. Our collection of Bakhtiar rugs is made of extraordinary fine wool and excellent quality. They are a all at least 30 years old and in perfect condition. They are hand-woven by the semi-nomadic Bakhtiari tribes people residing in Central Iran. The beautiful and colourful rugs are a big contrast to the dry and unforgiving environment in which they are made. Most weavers use fine quality wool from their own sheep, which is spun by hand and then given intense coloration mainly with vegetable dyes extracted from local plants.
